A favor from you, my readers.

So I've been thinking. I'd like to get some additional feedback on my book. So far, I have relied one hundred percent on the generosity and kindness of friends and family. Everyone has been wonderful and very helpful, but I can only ask so much of my very busy friends and family who all have multiple things on their plates. I'm also itching for some feedback from someone that doesn't really have a vested interest in NOT hurting my feelings. I need criticism, people! Criticism!

I have this idea of starting a private blog and posting one or two chapters at a time that people could read and then respond to. It seems like a lot to ask. You all are busy too, aren't you? But living way out here on the east coast makes it difficult to interact with other LDS authors. I know of no critique groups. I have no idea how to network and find anyone. So, I'm asking you.

Would any of you be willing to give my story a pair of fresh eyes and leave honest constructive feedback one or two chapters at a time? Here is what you need to know.

My book is most definitely an LDS book. It is very faith specific. That certainly doesn't mean you have to be Mormon to read it. But the entire book is faith oriented, which is important I think, for you to know. What else is it about? It's a book about relationships. It is about family drama and romance and finding faith.

I'm certain that the blog would need to be private. I'd like to have some idea of who is reading. And I would absolutely need you to be honest, even if it means you leaving your comments anonymously. Though I promise I'm a grown up. I'm ready to take it. :)

It seems like the relationship wouldn't be very reciprocal, except, perhaps it could be. As I have so readily asked others to help critique my work, I would do it for someone else in a heartbeat. I promise not to forget how full my jar of favors becomes. I will repay anytime I have the opportunity.

So. Anyone interested? The blog doesn't exist yet. It would seem silly for it to exist if there isn't anyone with the time and willingness to read. So, I'm asking first. Leave me a comment, or send me an email. If you give me your email address, then when I set everything up, I will invite you to read the blog. Many of you I feel I have a pretty good blogging relationship with and would trust immediately to read my heart and soul. And some of you are strangers... non-commenting readers that I might not recognize. If that's you, and you are interested in reading, please don't be offended if I want to know a bit about you before I give you the key to my innermost efforts. This is hard, and very scary for me. I am sure you are all lovely people. But you know. One has to be careful. :)

If you already have my manuscript, you are welcome to read what you have, though I've tweaked and changed some things even since I last sent it out. You are also welcome to just read this way, if it would be easier. Not SO overwhelming, I think, to read a little at a time. If you've already read it, and are willing to break it down a little at a time and provide additional feedback, I'd be grateful for that too.

So tell me your thoughts. Tell me I'm crazy. Tell me I live in LaLaLand. OR tell me you will help?

Hi MommyJ,

I'd be willing to read and critique your work. If you're agreeing to thick skin, I'll agree to call it as I see it, honestly and hopefully constructively-- although it's been said there's no such thing as constructive criticism.

If I can be helpful, use it, if not, I have thick skin too.

Mommy Snark,

I would be more than happy to help out. One condition though, if you wouldn't mind, that as my writing get's underway you would reciprocate with my manuscripts.

By the way, I have thoroughly enjoyed your blog for the past couple of months. I did not realize that you had a blog until I clicked one of your posted links on Facebook. You have a real talent.

Hey!
I was going to suggest dad, but I see he has already been here... he was always really good at helping me with my papers when I was in school, or at least looking over them and editing them for me when I needed it. And, as I've said/asked/begged (ok, so I didn't beg.. yet) I would love the chance to read it! my e-mail is whyzzerd@aol.com

Hi,

I would love a chance to read it. I've been reading-- and enjoying-- your blog since you started following me on Twitter, and have been thinking a lot about faith and family myself lately. Seems like a good fit.

yeah, I would love to read it...if you allowed me to. I'm not the overly literary type, but I've read quite a few of the greats. I'm not perfect at editing type and grammar though. Basically, I could give some feedback on the story and how it develops and flows. Sounds fun!

Hi Lisa. I've pretty well combed the thing over for grammar and punctuation. At this point, it's really the story I want feedback on, so sounds like you would be perfect. :) I'll need your email address to send you an invite, once I get it up and running. Thank you!

I love to read and therefore (sounds mormonish right) would love to read your manuscript. However, I may not be qualified. I won't even share with you my abysmal ACT english score. And without spell-check they'd kick my blogs off the web. I can however give you feed back on how the story flows and how I feel about it. I do read a lot!

Sigh, I wish I'd paid more attention during HS English.

I just stumbled onto your blog and totally love it! I love to read and didn't know you were an authoress. I someday would love to write a book.
I'd love to help you anyway you'd like, pretty fresh eyes here.

Sounds like a good idea. Have you asked other LDS authors -- those already published & in the blog world, too, & gotten their opinion? (that is, your book fits into the LDS genre, yes?)

In this virtual world, posting a bit at a time on a private blog sounds good, although I'd be afraid of someone stealing it or sharing it w/others w/out my permission. Didn't that happen w/Stephanie Meyer and Breaking Dawn? On that note, is there any way you could make your blog un-copy-able?

I'm going to hit the point of seeking readers/reviewers for my manuscript later this summer (hopefully) when my WIP is done. I'm in awe of others who are there already. I would offer to read your manuscript but at this time I can't due to living on way too much chocolate, guilt and lack of sleep.

You are awesome to have come so far! Go, girl! ;)

Me! Me!
I even had a random thought today how cool it was that you were writing a book and how it was too bad that I couldn't be your friend to read it and critique. And now you're giving everyone a chance! Lucky day! Ya... I need a life.
I think my email shows up if you hit reply to my comment. If not, I can email it.

Hey, I would love to get a sneak peak. I am not sure how much critisism I could give, just because I find you very well written, but it would still be fun. Then, if you get published I promise to purchase at least one book! (But maybe only if you do the crazy dance.)

Hi MommyJ!

I don't know if I have de-lurked yet and said hello, but I found your blog about 2 weeks ago and read it from beginning to end. It was a delightful few days. ;)

I'd love to critique your novel! I've been an avid reader since age 4 and I feel I could offer you helpful feedback. I do have some experience-I edit all of my best friend's articles and stories before she submits them to her instructor/mentor (she's trying to get published). I love to do it.

If you have questions, ask away! I'm currently moving to a new blog (trying to get my last name out of the blogosphere because of your blogging safety post, so I'm trying not to connect the new blog with my profile just yet) You're welcome to email me for the blog address and with any questions. You can reach me at the email listed on my profile page. :)

PS. you can disable right-click on your private blog which would make it a little more difficult to copy your work - people would have to transcribe it rather than copying and pasting. Google "disable right click" and you'll easily find the javascript you need if you choose to go that route.

I would be happy to read your book, but I'm with those who fear for its privacy and safety. For that reason, I think you need to limit access to people you trust, perhaps even people you know, even though I realize that's risky to relationships.

Whatever you decide, you can trust me, and I'll help however I can.

Think you're great!

Holy cow. Thank you so much to all of you for your willingness. I'm touched that so many, and many others that responded via email are willing to help. If you do not hear from me right away, know that it isn't personal. I'd like to keep the group small so that it isn't too overwhelming for me. But this journey is nowhere near over yet. I've got my list of willing readers and will turn to it whenever the need arises!

You guys are awesome. Every single one of you. :)

Hey,
Definitely here if you need the help. I've been a part of a critique group before and I am a writer myself, though not a very good one, lol.

You can email me at kimkayjohnson @ gmail. com if you decide to go ahead with it.

Ever since you mentioned you we're writing a novel I've been hoping to read it. I love your writing on your blog. I'm in no way professional but could give you feedback about how the general public might feel about it. I know I'm the 17th comment and I don't know if you wanted to limit the number of people who have access to read it but I would love to help if I can!

Hey mommy snark -- it's melanie rasmussen. I'm also starting to write - but more of a children's fantasy. I've taken some classes (not that that mean a darn thing)and would love to offer any help you need. Plus - I'm pretty picky with my lds romances - so I might have different insights to offer :) Your welcome to email me the whole enchilada if you want. I'd love to help.

I see that you already have several offers, but I would still love to help.
I think the private blog is a good idea and I agree that you need to limit the access.
Please add me to your list of willing readers and know that your story will be safe with me.

I would love to read your books. This is something I have been looking to do for some time. I love reading and I always wonder if I would have caught all the grammatical errors when I come across them in a published book.

I can give you any info you need if you email me.

Good luck with your adventure and I hope to see you published, soon.

I just thought that you will need to have people sign an agreement to not use your stuff as their own. That is always the risk, but I would sign a whatever they call it in the literary world (it's a confidentiality agreement in the mental health world).

I'd love to read your work. My only problem is a forget to visit the private blogs I like. Could you email when you have a new post?

J, I'd love to help out too. I love reading your blog and I'd be excited to see what you have written and comment on it. I've had a secret dream to write book one day, but have no inspiration to get me started.
