What children are made of

I am convinced that in all their sweetness and adorability, children are actually made up of little secret compartments of dirt and sand and cracker crumbs. It is the only way I can explain the little trails and pathways left behind the pittering and pattering of their feet, the outline of crumbs surrounding the still warm spot on the couch. Crumbs when crackers have not been eaten, dirt when they have not been outside.

Secret compartments, indeed.
