Last week I exchanged emails with one Eric Ruhalter, an engaging and entertaining writer and father living in New Jersey... he sent me a copy of his new book, "The Kid Dictionary... A Book of Words Parents Need but Don't Have." Oh, how I laughed all weekend.
You know when you hand your kid a juice box, and, though you say over and over, in rapid succession, "Don't squeeze, don't squeeze!!", they still squeeze and a big spurt of juice spills all over the floor you just mopped and the shirt you just washed? Well, now that moment has a name. It's a drinkle.
A few more of my favorites:
STONEWAIL: (STOWN-weyl) v: The strategic act of displaying no emotion in response to your child's public tantrum.
(You know when this happens... you are ignoring your kid because you KNOW they are fine and don't really need anything and will be better served if you do NOT indulge the noise... but someone who doesn't know children so well, and perhaps doesn't even have children of their own, looks at you incredulously and says, "Aren't you going to answer them?" Well now you can answer, "No. I'm stonewailing...")
WISHJACK: (WISH-jak) v: To maliciously blow out the candles on another child's birthday cake.
(So cruel... but you know it happens!!)
The book is literally bursting with so many funny words and definitions... I was thoroughly entertained, and quite frequently marveled at Mr. Ruhalter's ability to capture the attitudes and events of life with children in a singular definition. The book is lighthearted, and silly, and guaranteed fun for anyone even a little bit familiar with day to day kid life.
