So, when I drive... I sing. I crank up whatever it is I'm listening to, laugh as my children roll their eyes and cover their ears, and then I sing my little heart out. Is that something I shouldn't admit? It IS a little embarrassing when someone catches you doing it. But since I'm pretty sure that anyone who tells you they DON'T sing in the car is lying, I don't mind admitting it here in the privacy of my very own little blog. I mean, you won't tell anyone right?
The problem with my singing in the car is that it gets me into trouble. Because if I'm really feeling the music, I am NOT paying attention to my speedometer. Once when I was 16, and driving over to a friend's house to pick her up and head to the mall, I popped my new Titanic soundtrack into the CD player and became Celine Dion, singing on stage in Vegas. My heart really was going on...
Until nice Mr. Policeman pulled me over right in front of my high school. He was mean, he was cruel, he made fun of me (not for the singing... I don't think he saw that part.), he made me cry. And then he wrote me a big fat ticket for going um, 73 in a 45. Curse you, stupid music! Curse you! I had to go to defensive driving school for that one, to keep it from hitting my driving record. Have you ever attending defensive driving school? It was awesome. I remember sitting in a circle, and listening as everyone in the room had to stand up and state who they were and why they were in the class.
"I'm Dan. I'm 46 years old. I passed a school bus."
"I'm Judy. I'm 35 years old. I drove drunk four times."
"I'm Lester. I'm 19 years old. I rode my moped without a helmet."
"I'm MommyJ. (sniff, sniff) I'm 16 years old. And I just wanted to be Celine Dion!!!"
It was my only speeding ticket, that one. So the defensive driving school must have worked. But I have come dangerously close on a few other occasions, and it's normally because I'm listening to something that makes me feel like singing.
Fortunately for my driving record, Jordan has taken it upon himself to keep me from ever doing anything even remotely dangerous while driving again. I swear that little kid is the most responsible 8 year old I've ever known.
"Mommy, do you realize you're going 7 miles over the speed limit? I think you better slow down!"
"Mommy, I think the curves are a little bit sharp for you to be going so fast."
"Mommy, maybe you should stop singing and pay more attention to the road..."
Harumpf to all that...
I cannot wait until he is sixteen and learning how to drive. I am so reserving a spot in his backseat.
